On Indigenous Land. Today and everyday, it’s i On Indigenous Land.

Today and everyday, it’s important to acknowledge that our society and much of the world is built on stolen Indigenous land.

The civic infrastructure, the economic system, private development systems, our relationships with natural resources and all of our relatives are all connected to and in different ways built upon the colonial occupation of this land and the violent displacement of Indigenous people.

As we engage and heal this history and its present impacts- here and in the world- it's essential that our allies and accomplices go beyond just acknowledging and being thankful for Indigenous land, beyond just just recognizing the existence of Indigenous people. These are important first steps but if you stop there, it actually can recreate and perpetuate harm for Indigenous people.

Some ways for guests to engage more deeply include to learn about the history of the land you are on and the struggles of Indigenoys people, support Indigenous led work, act in solidarity, show up, take actions, talk to your people, give things back including land, redistribute resources, leverage your privilege to transform these legacies of inequality, take care of our earth and each other, and be a good guest.

We share this art by Fernando Marti, @el_compay_nando, a glimpse of an urban Indigenous Bay Area, what was, is and could be.

[ID: An image of the urban Indigenous Bay Area printed in a yellow to green ombré . It shows a landscape with Ohlone people in Tule boats navigating towards a marshland and village site with tule houses. Rising behind this scene is the City with construction cranes, skyscrapers and a bridge. The sky is dotted with birds and smoke drifting through. The text reads On Indigenous Land. ]

Indigenous land trust empowers women to reclaim an Indigenous land trust empowers women to reclaim and restore ancestral land!

“The organization defines rematriation as “work to restore sacred relationships between Indigenous people and our ancestral land, honoring our matrilineal societies, and in opposition of patriarchal violence and dynamics.”

They want the country to move away from seeing the land and its resources as something to extract from — a practice that is often associated with men’s domination — and toward viewing the land as something to take care of. Indigenous, women-led conservation, in Gould’s view, is one way to bring that balance back to the land....."

Give More Than Thanks. Give Things Back. Last ye Give More Than Thanks. Give Things Back.

Last year we issued an invitation to return found, stolen, and misappropriated Indigenous cultural items as part of RETURNS Participatory Rematriation.

More than 100 items were returned during the weekend before Thingstaken, including ancient Ohlone grinding stones, Precolumbian pottery, burden baskets found in an attic, ancient arrowheads, and shells of endangered and extinct abalone.

All returned items originating from within the territory were returned to the Villages of Lisjan Nation. We are still in the process of determining origins and returning some of the other items to their relatives.

While we did not holding a public RETURNS event this year we accept returns of cultural items, homes and land from within Lisjan territory. If you have items from other origins, research how to reconnect them to their relatives.

And this holiday, please, give something more than thanks to Indigenous people. Take a tangible action in support of Indigenous cultural regeneration, sovereignty, landback and rematriation.

On Indigenous Land. What does it mean to be on In On Indigenous Land.

What does it mean to be on Indigenous land?

If you are not on your own ancestral lands, how did you get where you are?

What can you do to support the people of whose land you are on?

Honor Native Heritage and Indigenous Futures this month and every month by engaging in the real history of where you are, by going beyond acknowledgement, by supporting Indigenous led work with resources and actions, and transforming relationships with land towards reciprocity and rematriation.

Indigenous People for a Free Palestine. We stand Indigenous People for a Free Palestine.

We stand in solidarity with Palestine, also known as فلسطين, or Filasṭīn.

The vision of Sogorea Te’ Land Trust is to cultivate rematriation and to heal and transform the legacies of colonization, genocide and patriarchy, both where we are and in the world. As an Indigenous women led organization, as peoples descended from survivors and resisters of genocidal and colonial projects, we are in solidarity with all peoples dispossessed from their ancestral lands and struggling for their survival.

Our hearts are with families displaced from their lands and broken apart, those who are grieving their children and loved ones, with young people struggling with the trauma of violent oppression, with the land, the waters and the air poisoned by war and violence. Our hearts are with our relatives. Our hearts are with Palestine.
